I’ve been thinking a lot about how flat affiliate marketing feels.
We’ve had decades to iterate on it — and yet most programs still follow a simple formula:
Creator promotes → buyer clicks → merchant fulfills → commission paid.
There’s nothing wrong with that. But there’s also nothing particularly exciting about it. It's transactional. Rigid. And worst of all, it breaks the moment someone actually enters your site.
Let’s talk about what’s missing — and what an ideal affiliate experience could look like.
1. Affiliates Aren’t Just Traffic Sources
Often, affiliates are treated like extra acquisition levers. But the best creators today are more than just distribution channels. They’re:
Curators
Educators
Trend setters
Community catalysts
And yet, most affiliate systems treat them like stylized ad pixels. They get a referral link and a commission. That’s it.
If we want better performance, integrated customer experiences and deeper alignment, we need to give creators more ownership in how your products are presented — not just in their content, but on your store itself.
2. There’s No Shared Canvas
When brands collaborate with artists, designers, or influencers, there’s usually a shared surface to build on: a product line, a campaign, a bundle, a landing page.
But affiliate marketing? It’s mostly fire-and-forget.
Link goes out → buyer enters → creator disappears.
There’s no co-creation. No opportunity to shape how the brand shows up. No way to embed the creator’s voice into the store experience.
Unless you’re Louis Vuitton collaborating with Takashi Murakami.
Or Warby Parker doing a custom drop with Emma Chamberlain.
Or Dr Martens co-creating with Marc Jacobs.
These brands get it — they create experiences that feel co-authored.
But for most merchants — especially on Shopify — this kind of co-branded storytelling isn’t accessible. The tools don’t exist. Yet.
3. The Affiliate Influence Breaks Too Early
Even if you do get someone to click a well-crafted affiliate link, the creator’s influence disappears the moment the buyer hits your homepage.
“Thanks for the traffic — we’ll take it from here.”
But what if the creator’s presence stayed with the buyer?
What if the experience was continuous — not just at the top of the funnel, but through to purchase?
Imagine:
A "Recommended by [Creator]" tag on the product page
A curated bundle or “[Creator’s] bundle” pre-loaded in the cart
A short creator quote at checkout reinforcing the purchase
A widget in the cart: “This order supports [Creator]”
These aren’t gimmicks. They’re ways to preserve trust continuity — to remind the buyer why they’re here, and who helped them feel confident buying.
It's a small shift, but it changes the dynamic from click-driven to connection-driven.
4. No One’s Optimizing for the Mid-Funnel
Most affiliate programs obsess over clicks and attribution.
But the most effective creators don’t just generate traffic — they help people decide.
Great influencers sit in the middle of the funnel — translating specs into benefits, telling real stories, and making the product feel relevant.
Affiliate systems don’t support this. They assume the moment someone lands on your site, the job is done. But that’s exactly where buyers still need help.
This is where curated edits, bundles, and themed landing pages shine.
They give affiliates the chance to influence the purchase from inside the store — right where the decision happens.
5. It’s Still Too One-Sided
Most affiliate platforms are built for control: approvals, caps. And that’s important.
But it’s rigid. With each additional click on the merchant website, the creator’s recommendation becomes a faint whisper to the visitor.
There’s no collaboration space. No shared editorial process. No ability to build something together and optimise it over time.
There’s an opportunity for affiliates and creators to be part of the brand, not just pushing it.
A More Collaborative Future
What would it look like if affiliate marketing felt more like a creative partnership?
Creators co-curating product bundles
Landing pages that reflect their voice and your brand
Widgets and storytelling elements that follow the buyer from link → PDP → checkout
Full attribution baked into the experience
Merchants and creators building something together, not in parallel
That’s the kind of experience I’m working on.
👋 Interested in such a tool?
I’m building a Shopify app that brings this vision to life.
It includes all the standard affiliate features you’d expect — tracking, campaigns, commissions — but it also unlocks something new:
a Guest Edit that lets creators co-create shoppable, co-branded pages, badges and widgets used right inside your store.
It’s like welcoming your top affiliates into your storefront rather than being left outside — without losing control of your brand.
Still early. But I’m excited. If this resonates, I’d love to hear from you and building experiences worth sharing at this email.
